This condition is known as hypohidrosis, or anhidrosis. It can affect your entire body, a single area, or scattered areas. The inability to sweat can cause overheating. This can lead to heat stroke, which is a potentially life-threatening condition.

What is anhidrosis? Anhidrosis is a condition in which you can't sweat (perspire) normally in one or more areas of your body. Sweating helps remove heat from your body so you can cool down. If you can't sweat, your body overheats, which can be dangerous and even life-threatening.

Heatstroke: This is an extremely dangerous, life-threatening condition in which your body temperature rises to 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Heatstroke can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, coma and even death.

It is most commonly focal and caused by local skin injury (eg, due to trauma, radiation, infection [eg, leprosy], or inflammation) or by atrophy of glands resulting from systemic rheumatic disease (eg, systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren syndrome) (1).

Patients with anhidrosis in only a small part of their body might not require any treatment. Medications that have been reported to help include prednisolone, a corticosteroid and injection of a local anesthetic into the sympathetic nerve tissue in the neck. If the cause is unknown, treatment options are limited.
